Keeping Your Computer Clean

Picture this: You're at the office working late on a BIG proposal you must present tomorrow morning, when suddenly your computer shuts off, before you have even had a chance to save your document. Almost hysterical, you check the power cord and the connection to your monitor and find they are properly connected. Is it a virus? A Trojan? A power surge? Worse: dust bunnies.

For the amount of time people spend on computers each day, it is surprising that the computer is so often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Think about it: we maintain our cars, lawnmower, and even the oven, but when it comes to computers, we assume they are self-maintaining.

Cleaning your computer not only keeps it in good working condition, but also helps to prevent spreading germs.

Please review our cleaning suggestions below and contact us with any questions or comments.

Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning essentials for your computer environment:

  • Anti-static Wrist Guard
  • Compressed Air
  • Battery-operated vacuum
  • Cotton Tip Swabs
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol (80% dilution)
  • Lint-free Cloths
  • Paper Towels
  • Tweezers

General Cleaning Tips

  1. Shut off and unplug your computer.
  2. Do not spray any type of liquid directly onto your computer. Instead, spray the liquid onto a lint-free cloth and then use the cloth to apply the liquid to the exterior of your computer. You may also use cotton tip swabs.
  3. Use a battery-operated vacuum to remove dirt and dust from the computer and keyboard. Under no circumstances should you use a standard vacuum, as the static electricity it generates can damage the internal components.
  4. Do not get liquid on any inside component of your computer.
  5. Use the compressed air in the interior of your computer. Pay particular attention to the heatsink and fan on top of your processor, as they collect a lot of dust. Also use the compressed air on any audio, video or modem cards, case fans, hard disks, power supply and removable media drives.
  6. Make sure to use a lint-free cloth over all holes and vents to remove dust.

Keeping Your Computer Clean

  1. Clean your computer every 3 months.
  2. Do not eat or drink around the computer.
  3. Do not smoke around your computer.

In Summary

It is our hope that these tips will help make your computing environment clean and healthy. If you have any questions, please contact us.
